God Hates Astronauts #1 – Comic Review

If you’ve never heard of God Hates Astronauts before, don’t worry because this is a perfect jumping on point and the previous incarnation is easily purchased from a variety of sources. And you will want to purchase it after reading this new number 1; it is laugh out loud funny.

Two years ago, in the depths of space, disaster befalls the Crabulon spaceship commanded by Admiral Tiger Eating A Cheeseburger and his second in command, Mr Crabtree, barely has time to be distraught about his impending doom before his doom impends.

Meanwhile, in the present, Lord Astro-Farmer explains to his disciples exactly why they have to leave the Earth on a silo rocket despite the fact that this is against NASA law and will bring them to the attention of the Power Persons Five. The flashback is a love story between two lovers whose relationship is not accepted by their peers. It’s like Romeo and Juliet, if Juliet was a chicken!

The back story of Lord Astro-Farmer fills the gap between introduction and massive fight scene because when Power Persons Five turn up in all their crazy glory, the shit really hits the fan. I’ll leave the introduction of the characters to the comic itself, for when you read it only then will you believe it. However, 3D Cowboy needs a special mention. He is a fourth wall breaking narrator who sets the scene for all those new to GHA’s world but pops up from time to time to make sure that you, dear reader, are coping with the oft offensive hilarity which greets you on each page.

The script, the story and the string of bad jokes are brilliant. They all weave together to become something more than its parts. It’s as if Ryan Browne took the surrealism of Monty Python, the crudeness of the British adult humour comic Viz and the Sci-Fi story style of The Manhattan Projects and mixed them all up in a blender before pouring the whole bloody mess into a comic. But it works, hell yea it works. Even the sound effects lettering is funny, for example “Rocket 2 Da Moon” screams the Silo ignition as it sends the phallic shaped rocket zooming into space.

This is not going to be for everyone and some people who are easily offended will definitely want to give this a miss but if you want your funny bone tickling pick this up. If you want to know what would happen if Garth Ennis and Jonathan Hickman co-wrote a comic, pick this up. If you want to know how to make society accept your sexual relationship with a chicken..erm, maybe you should see a specialist. But on the way there, pick this up.
