Marvel Studios Show Their Phase Three Hand – The Infinity War Is Coming!

Well we thought that Marvel Studio’s “Special Event” today was going to be big but wow, what an event it turned out to be!  We were indeed told about some movies we expected to see but we discovered even more!

So let’s get straight to what we found out and what Kevin Feige had to say about them:

CA Civil War

First up, Captain America 3 was announced.  Originally billed as Captain America: Serpent Society to throw us off the scent (oh Marvel, you cheeky chaps you!), we were later told that will indeed see the Captain and Iron Man facing off on opposite sides.  How closely it’ll follow the original Civil War storyline is unknown.  But it’s a good bet to say that Spiderman won’t be in it.  However there’s speculation that perhaps a new face to the MCU will take the Spiderman role.  Who is that?  Oh, we’ll get to him shortly….

Doc Strange

Next to be announced was “The Sorcerer Supreme”, Doctor Strange.  In the few days leading up to the event, it was widely hyped that Benedict Cumberbatch was in talks or had agreed to take the role.  Although Marvel didn’t reveal who would be playing Strange, they did reveal the movie will be directed by Scott Derrickson, a man who is no stranger to the strange and supernatural after directing and writing movies such as Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver us from Evil.  So basically Marvel are warning us in advance that we may have to take a change of underwear when we go to see the movie!

“It takes a while to work on these movies before they’re ready to come to you in theaters,” said Feige. “Doctor Stephen Strange, brilliant neurosurgeon, bit of an arrogant fellow who gets in a car accident and ruins what he thinks are the tools of his trade: his hands.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the supernatural, that involves everything from quantum mechanics to string theory. The idea of this film is to open up a whole new corner of the cinematic universe. We want to enter, through Strange, the world of parallel dimensions.”

Those loveable bunch of losers (Star Lord’s words, not mine!), the Guardians of the Galaxy will be next.  No word on the title of the movie but I put forward Guardians of the Galaxy: Still Hooked on a Feeling for consideration by the judges.  No?  Oh well….  Our original Guardians are all due to return and as the returning director James Gunn revealed in interviews after the first movie’s release, we’ll meet Peter Quill’s father.  Who’s your bet on it being?

T3 Ragnorok

Now this is an interesting one.  Thor: Ragnarok was announced and it appears it’ll be a big movie according to Kevin Feige: “This is a very important movie for us in Phase 3.  We plan on taking Thor to another level. It picks up where we leave Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron and impacts everything that comes after.”

The Ragnarok storyline in the comics was a big deal so what’s that hold in store for the MCU version?  Again, rumours aplenty suggest that Thor may perhaps die in Age of Ultron and Ragnarok will see him attempt to fight his way through Hell to get back to Earth/Asgard.  Regardless of what happens, we’re going to have to wait a couple of years between the end of Age of Ultron and the start of Ragnarok to discover what happens!!

Black Panther

Remember I mentioned that someone else could take the place of Spiderman in Captain America: Civil War?  Well that person could well be T’Challa aka Black Panther.  Not only was the movie announced but we also found out that he will appear ‘in costume’ in Civil War and that he will be played by the relative unknown Chadwick Boseman.

Speaking about Black Panther Kevin Feige said: “Black Panther and all of Wakanda is one of the most interesting characters in Marvel history.  Something I already showed you today contains an Easter egg that leads directly into Black Panther. He’s a bit of a prince, he may even become a bit of a king, but it’s all about how this isolationist country meets the world. Maybe it goes well, maybe it doesn’t.”

Concept art was also released and those lucky to be in attendance got a copy of it too!

Cap Marvel

Next up we finally have a female superhero movie in the MCU but not, as many thought, for Black Widow but instead Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.  No word yet on who will be playing her but my choice?  Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, Dexter, 24: Live Another Day).

“This Captain Marvel’s name is Carol Danvers,” said Kevin Feige. “This film has been in the works almost as long as Doctor Strange or Guardians of the Galaxy before it came out, and one of the key things was figuring out what we wanted to do with it. Her adventures are very earthbound, but her powers are based in the cosmic realm.”

After we meet Ms Danvers we will then go on to meet the Inhumans.  And we’re not going to meet three or four of them, we’re going to meet a lot more than that!!  “November 3, 2018 will introduce dozens of characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” promised Feige. “We really do believe the Inhumans can be a franchise or a series of franchise unto themselves. They have dozens of powers and an amazing social structure. With our 20th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we wanted to continue to refine what that universe is about.”

Feige also mentioned that we’ll discover more about Inhumans sooner than we were expecting.  My guess?  The Twins in Age of Ultron get their powers via the mystical “Terrigen Mist” (because they can’t be referred to as mutants remember) which also gives the Inhumans their powers and abilities or we’ll see something during the current season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that reveals the Inhumans to us (there’s been a long standing theory that Skye is herself a Inhuman, could we see that theory be proven correct?).

Avengers Infinity War

What an amazing bunch of announcements.  A great line-up of movies to look forward too and get excited for.  And then Marvel dropped the mic….  A video recapping moments from Phase 1 and 2 played with ominous music building to the crescendo and final image of Thanos holding the Infinity Gauntlet!  Obviously the event was closed off and wasn’t being filmed but there are pics out there and I advise you find it.  A great sight and one to get the excitement flowing!!

“We’ve always had a plan since Nick Fury broke into Tony Stark’s house and told him he’s part of a bigger universe,” recalled Kevin Feige.   “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 is the beginning of the culmination of everything that has come before.”

People were wondering how Marvel were going to fit what is sure to be a big battle with Thanos in to one movie.  Well, split it in to two!  And what a potential line-up of characters we could have to take the battle to him.  We could have:

Captain America

Iron Man

Hulk/Bruce Banner

Black Widow

Scarlett Witch

Black Panther

Doctor Strange

The Guardians of the Galaxy

Captain Marvel

The Inhumans

And whose to say that any of the characters from the Netflix TV shows (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist & The Defenders) or Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. won’t show up either?  And what about characters that could be introduced within the movies in Phase 3 that haven’t already been announced??  ARGH!!  So many possibilities!!!

So what do you think?  Excited for the movies we have coming up?  Did you expect or hope for different characters getting their own movies?  Let us know in the comments below!
