Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Teaser #2 Breakdown

This time, on Star Wars Teaser Breakdown: DUDE! That was AWESOME!
The Star Wars celebration in Anaheim yesterday featured the unveiling of the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer. You may have seen it by now! As before, we’re going to go through some key images, speculate, nerdgasm and generally get overexcited. Eight months from tomorrow!
Apparently, this is not Tattooine. This is a new planet called Jaku. The trailer opens to the strains of John Williams’ magnificent Binary Sunset, as we pan along the desert wastes to see this downed X-Wing in the foreground and Star Destroyer in the background. A lot’s gone on in the 30 years since the second Death Star went down, and it’s pretty clear that the war between the Rebellion and the Empire was far from finished. I totally expect to see the inside of that Star Destroyer, incidentally.
These next three images are placed very deliberately, I think, relative to the voiceover. The man speaking is, of course, Mark Hamill, reprising one of his more famous lines from Return of the Jedi; “The force is strong in my family. My father has it…” as we see the burnt, mangled helmet of Darth Vader, removed from the pyre on Endor’s moon. Who has it? Who knows.
“…I have it…” as we see a hooded figure with a mechanical right hand reach out for R2D2. Luke Skywalker, as we all know, lost his right hand to Vader in the Cloud City (The Empire Strikes Back), has been known to hide his face under a hood (Return of the Jedi) and is a close companion of R2D2. I think this is our first look at Luke Skywalker in the film. The ash and flame suggests somewhere volcanic, perhaps Mustafar, where his father truly became Darth Vader (Revenge of the Sith)?
“…my sister has it. You have that power, too.” as we see what appears to be Luke’s original lightsaber pass between two female hands. I’m going to go out on a limb here; I think the hand on the left, accepting the lightsaber, is Rey, the new character played by Daisy Ridley; and I think the hand on the right, passing the lightsaber to her, is Carrie Fisher’s, reprising her role as Princess Leia. This is Luke’s sister passing his legacy to his neice, her daughter. I think Rey is going to be our main Jedi and main character for the new Star Wars trilogy. A lot of pressure to put on young Daisy Ridley, but I can’t wait to see her.
Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his X-Wing squadron take off, presumably at the end of their river run from the first trailer. A note to all you blockbuster makers out there – that look on Oscar Isaac’s face, and the whooping sounds he’s making? That’s called an “expression of joy”. I could stand more of it in my summer and Christmas entertainment movies. Dameron’s gear is covered in Rebel insignia, although whether they’re still Rebels now or the new power remains to be seen.
After a quick flash of Kylo Ren and his lightsaber, more on whom in a second, we get our first look at Rey, Finn (John Boyega) and everyone’s favourite new character BB-8. They’re running from an explosion, presumably an airstrike from that TIE-fighter in the top left corner and any friends it may have with it. Whether that shot is meant for Rey, or more likely the deserting Storm Trooper Finn, remains to be seen. We’re in another junkyard-looking environment, and I think it’s very probable that Rey is going to start out living off the land on Raku as a scavenger.
Our first full look at Kylo Renn, and he’s wearing a mask so we’re still not sure of the actor yet (though it’s probably Adam Driver). A sudden turn and reach out with the force suggests someone’s probably just surprised him. The location appears to be the same planet as where we saw Luke and R2D2 earlier on, so presumably that’s why he and the Storm Troopers are here. I’m going to speculate that the mask isn’t strictly necessary; though we’ve seen him wearing it in other artwork released today, I think it’s going to be more of an affectation. I think Renn is going to be the one who has Vader’s helmet, and he’s very probably paying tribute to the legendary Sith Lord.
A better look at the new Storm Troopers, who are beautifully designed, and what I would imagine is the new Imperial insignia up on the banner in the background. And is it silly of me to speculate that the dude in black giving the address under the point of the insignia is Max von Sydow?
Interestingly, it’s that airborne TIE-fighter that’s doing the shooting. I think this is going to be part of the opening sequence of the film. That fighter is being commandeered by Finn, and this is him making his escape from the Imperials and preparing to go on the run.
Cloak over one shoulder like a boss. I would expect this guy to be some form of elite trooper, a la the Emperor’s red guards from Return of the Jedi.
The star of the first trailer returns. We get a little more Millenium Falcon eye-candy as it gets chased into the remains of what looks like a Super Star Destroyer. Could be the same thing we saw in the intro and we were just really far away from it. And then a familiar voice pipes up…
“Chewie… we’re home.” Shrieks and squeals and fist-pumps galore as the Galaxy’s favourite double-act, Han Solo and Chewbacca, are back on the Millenium Falcon! This movie is going to be awesome!
Yeah, so I’m over the moon with this trailer. All the new stuff looks great, and it hits all the right nostalgia beats to make the Star Wars fan of the last couple of decades in me squeal with joy and physically hug my brother who I was watching with when it was done. How about you, Consumers? Obviously you’re all looking forward to it, but is there anything I missed? Do you have some theories of your own? Let us know in the comments, and until the next trailer, may the force be etc.
