Dota 2’s Prize Pool for TI4 Smashes $4,000,000 Mark
It’s been one hell of a year for Valve’s most popular MOBA, Dota 2 after last year’s incredible success of their annual tournament, The International. This year it has already blown away all expectations in terms of teams and prize pool, and it’s only two days into the festivities. The event will be hosted at The KeyArena in Seattle in July and will see 16 teams battle it out on the Dota playing field for a chance to win the biggest prize pool in esports.
Last year, the TI3 compendium was released, a wonderful little book of all sorts of fancy things to get you excited for the upcoming tournament as well as driving up the prize pool. So what did it hit? A cool $2.8 million USD. We all thought that was a lot of money, topping League of Legend’s Season Three World Championship by almost a million, however it was obviously not enough and Valve knew they could do better this year.
Valve’s TI4 compendium was released yesterday, offering a whole host of rewards in return for purchasing the little purple book and completing tasks; such as picking out your favourite teams, playing matches and completing challenges with randomly assigned heroes. Fun, right? If point boosters and achievements don’t get you excited, for every milestone reached in their bid to esports domination they will release new and cool free stuff including new matchmaking features and immortal items. Not only that, but 50% of all the compendium sales go to the TI4 prize pool, and this one is making the teams more bloodthirsty than ever.
Only two days into the compendiums release and the prize pool has tipped $4 million USD. No, that’s not a typo, that’s a real amount of money. Also with the US qualifiers kicking off today, we’re going to be seeing the prize pool rising even higher. Let’s just hope that the finals are even better than last years battle between the “Final Boss” Natus Vincere and the TI3 winners, The Alliance so that when the players happily retire to their new villas with their yachts after winning (hopefully EG’s Fear can afford another upgrade to his rig), we can remember them in style.
