Game of Thrones Sons of Winter heads North of The Wall

We return to the Telltale’s take on the Game of Thrones universe for a fourth instalment titled ‘Sons of Winter’.

The relationship between the Whitehills and the Forresters is as fraught as ever, and so delicate that it feels like the slightest wrong move could tip the balance into battle. Despite this I still take decisions on behalf of the weak and injured Rodrik that are far too ballsy and play pretty fast and loose with the fate of his family. It’s paid off for me so far, though I feel like our choices aren’t neccessarily changing the story. Pretty much the same outcome will happen regardless of what you choose, but I don’t think Telltale ever meant for the story to differ hugely from player to player. Instead I think the choices made are a reflection on the gamer, especially those that have to be decided on quickly. You think back, sometimes with regret and sometimes with conviction.

We are taken North of The Wall with Gared and company in search of the North Grove, a mystery left to him by his dying Lord. An encounter with some Wildlings gets hairy pretty quickly when Cotter attempts to reason with them, being a Wildling himself. Gared (and Finn, if you brought him along) struggle to decide whether they completely trust him, showing that the suspicion between the Wildlings and Crows runs deep, even after vows are broken.

Playing the game in correllation with the show is also an interesting experience, as the current show storyline with Ramsay Bolton adds much more horror to the game, as Rodrik returns to Ironrath to discover Talia having an uncomfortable conversation with the bastard.

Sons of Winter is possibly the quietest episode so far, which isn’t neccessarily a bad thing. A stealth element is introduced whilst playing as Asher, as you have to take out a group of Mereen guards at Daenerys’ behest. You also learn more about Beksha’s history, and are faced with the difficult choice between adhering to the strict orders given to you by the Khaleesi or helping Beksha get retribution for her damaged past.
